Butoh Technique: Discovering the Anonymous Body with Meshi Chavez
May 21 & 22, 2016 | 2:00-6:00pm
Single Day: $45-$65 (sliding scale) | FULL WORKSHOP: $75-125 (sliding scale)
In western cultures, Butoh has taken on many forms and structures. At its core however, Butoh is the development of extreme specificity in movement though discipline, attention, and refinement. Butoh departs from other forms of dance by encouraging dancers to disappear into the task at hand. Each dancer learns to remove himself or herself as the doer and learns to become hollow or empty- a anonymous body. Most dance forms come from the idea that “Someone” dances. In Butoh we work from the notion that “Something” dances, “Something” is moved.
During Butoh Technique we will learn to access our bodies in a new, fresh context.
Together we will explore techniques of embodied movement while fostering creativity and cultivating performance skills. Together we will discover the Anonymous Body. This workshop is open to movers of all levels.
Conduit Kids Summer Dance Camp
June 13-17, 2016 | 1:00-4:30 PM | Grades 3-5 (but also flexible)
Developmentally-based dance and movement exploration for kids! Come join a dance camp that has creativity at its center! Move, jump, shake, improvise to music, dabble in art and color, and create your own dance!
In this one-week afternoon camp we will explore concepts of bodies moving through space, our relationship to time, and how much or little energy our bodies need to move and groove. We will use the colors of the rainbow for movement inspiration. We will tell stories through movement and create rainbow-inspired art to bring home. We will finish off the week with a performance for family and friends.Come dance and have a blast at Conduit Kids Summer Dance Camp! Please contact Teacher Sarah Brown for more information.
Contemporary Dance with James Healey
Tuesdays & Thursdays June 14-July 21 | 10-11:30 AM
James Healey is offering a contemporary based movement class, exploring the fluidity of breath, gravity, and momentum within floor work and transitional movement connections. James was a founding member and rehearsal director with Shen Wei Dance Arts (NYC) from 2000-2009. His classes and creative work are highly influenced by his role and experience with the evolution of Shen Wei Dance Arts' Natural Body Development Technique, as well as his own explorations. This class series will be heavily floor work based, with a layered progression to standing phrase work. Ideal students for this series will be advanced high school levels, college students, and pre-professional dancers; however, all interested students are welcome and encouraged to attend.
